Birth time barely matters here, which is unusual for a chart tool. Sade Sati depends only on your Moon's SIGN, and the Moon takes about two and a quarter days to cross one — so an hour or two of uncertainty, or even most of a day, almost never changes the answer. If you are unsure of your time of birth, this is the page on this site you can most safely rely on.

What Sade Sati is

Sade Sati is the seven-and-a-half years Saturn spends crossing the three signs around the Moon you were born under — the one before it, your own, and the one after. Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to go round, so it comes back roughly once a generation.

Sade sati means seven and a half in Hindi, and that is the whole of the name. It describes a length of time, not a sentence.

Reading the table above

Every period of your life is listed, past and future, with the phase running now marked. The dates are Saturn's real sign changes read from the ephemeris, not a two-and-a-half-year average, so they are the dates an almanac would print.

Where a phase is marked as having a window rather than a single date, Saturn turned retrograde near that boundary and crossed back and forth over it for some months. That is normal and it is why two sources can give different start dates for the same Sade Sati.

Below the main list are the shorter Saturn transits — Dhaiya, Ashtama Shani, Kantaka Shani — which are separate from Sade Sati and often confused with it.

What each name means

Prathama DhaiyaThe first two and a half years, Saturn in the sign before your Moon.
Madhya DhaiyaThe middle stretch, Saturn in your Moon's own sign.
Tritiya DhaiyaThe last stretch, Saturn in the sign after your Moon.
Dhaiya / Small PanotiA separate two-and-a-half-year transit, Saturn in the 4th or 8th from your Moon. Not part of Sade Sati.
Ashtama ShaniSaturn in the 8th from the Moon — traditionally the most testing of the shorter transits.
Kantaka ShaniSaturn in the 10th from the Moon, read as friction in work and standing.

What people get wrong

Sade Sati is a rare misfortune.
It occupies about 27% of a long life — three or four periods, more than a quarter of your years. Anyone who lives into their eighties will see it three times. A thing that common is a season, not a catastrophe.
It is seven and a half years of bad luck.
The classical reading is pressure and consolidation, not ruin, and Saturn is the planet of earned results rather than punishment. A great many people build the most durable part of their life during one. The dates on this page are a fact; the dread attached to them is not.
This page can tell me how hard mine will be.
It cannot, and it does not try. That depends on where Saturn sits in your own chart, what it rules for you, and which period is running alongside — none of which is here. You are looking at when, and only when.
I need a remedy to get through it.
There are none on this page and there will not be. Sade Sati is the most heavily monetised idea in Indian astrology and that is worth knowing before you are sold anything for it.

Questions people ask

How accurate does my birth time need to be?
Barely at all, which is unusual here. This depends only on your Moon's sign, and the Moon takes about two and a quarter days to cross one — so even most of a day of uncertainty usually changes nothing. Of the tools on this site, this is the one to trust with a rough birth time.
Why does another site give me a different start date?
Usually the retrograde window. Where Saturn crosses a boundary, backs out and returns, one source takes the first crossing and another the last, and they can differ by months. The page marks those boundaries.
Does Sade Sati affect everyone born in the same month?
Everyone with the same Moon sign has the same dates — that is roughly one person in twelve, so yes, a great many people are in it with you at any time.
What is the difference between Sade Sati and Dhaiya?
Length and position. Sade Sati is seven and a half years across three signs around your Moon. Dhaiya is two and a half years in the 4th or 8th from it, and comes at different times.

Before you rely on this

  • Have the chart read to know whether it will be hard. This page gives dates and nothing else. Whether a Sade Sati is punishing or quietly productive depends on where Saturn sits in your chart, what it rules for you, and which period runs alongside it.
  • Treat the reputation with suspicion. Sade Sati is widely feared and plenty of people build the most solid part of their life during one. The dates are a fact; the dread is not.
  • There are no remedies here, and you do not need to buy your way out of a date.
