Vehicle Purchase Dates

New Delhi, India· time zone follows this location

Up to 400 days. Chaturmas and Adhik Maas are found from a wider scan than the range you pick, so a short range still has them applied.

Why these days

• The moon sits on one of the swift or gentle stars — the chara and mridu nakshatras, which the classical texts give to journeys and vehicles (Muhurta Chintamani).
• The 4th, 9th and 14th days of each lunar fortnight are left out. These are the Rikta or "empty" tithis, avoided for anything newly acquired.
• Leap months are left out — nothing new is begun during an Adhik Maas.
• The fortnight for ancestral rites is left out — the sixteen days of Pitru Paksha are for remembering the dead, not for new purchases.

Before you fix the date

• Pick the hour on the day. Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika fall inside a day rather than ruling it out, so they narrow the good hours instead of removing the date — look the day up on Day Panchang before you fix a time.
• Have your own chart read if the purchase is a big one. Whether a day suits you personally depends on your birth star, which no calendar can know.
• Check that the star lasts. A star can begin at sunrise and give way by mid-morning; these lists read one value per day.

This list narrows a whole year down to a shortlist, reading one value per day at sunrise. A printed almanac checks the hours inside each day and allows a few more stars, so its list will be longer than this one and the two will not match date for date. Neither is a substitute for a practitioner.
