What it is
Natural beryl coloured by chromium or vanadium. Colombian, Zambian and Brazilian material differ visibly. Inclusions are normal and are not a fault.

Certification
Supplied with a laboratory report identifying the species, the origin where determinable, and whether the stone is natural and untreated. The report describes the stone itself — it says nothing about results.
Choosing the right one
Sold by carat. Most emeralds on the market are oiled to improve clarity; the report states whether a stone is treated, and we will not describe a treated stone as untreated.
Looking after it
- Never use an ultrasonic cleaner — it strips the oil and can open fissures.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth.
- Store separately.
